Peace talks could finally be set to take place between Russia and Ukraine – and it might all be thanks to The Pope, according to a source.

Since Vladimir Putin first ordered his Russian troops to invade neighbouring Ukraine at the start of 2022, talks of ceasefire and peace have been few and far between.

But it now appears that, despite hundreds of thousands of front line deaths, peace might soon be on the horizon.

According to the Vatican’s news site Il Sismografo, a Papal source has claimed that envoys sent by The Pope to meet with both the Russian President and Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a desperate bid to bring about peace – and it has been claimed that Putin could be ready to listen.

The source, who has not been named, said: “Together with Pope Francis we should ask, together with Ukraine, how to create peace: we cannot passively accept that the war of aggression continues in that country.

“It is the Ukrainian people who are dying and suffering.

“It is time to take initiatives to create a just peace in Ukraine and in all the so-called gray areas in Europe.

“I guarantee you that the Holy See will continue to play its part.”

Anti-Kremlin Russian news outlet Meduza has said that Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni declined to comment to several news outlets about the comments, but added: “Now is the moment to take initiative to create a just peace in Ukraine.”

The Pope has previously said that he was “willing” to make peace happen.

Last month, after visiting Budapest for three days, he said: “Everyone is interested in the path of peace.

“I am willing, I am willing to do everything that needs to be done.

“Even now it is I went on a mission, but it’s not public yet, let’s see.

“When it’s public, I’ll talk about it.”
