Hundreds of migrants rushed across the United States-Mexico after heavy rains destroyed their makeshift tent camp in the northeastern Mexican town of Matamoros.

The chaotic scene was captured on multiple videos and showed the group sneaking past the metal gates on the Mexican side of the Gateway International Bridge on Monday. 

Dozens of migrants were caught running through the pedestrian side of the bridge as a Mexican border agent extended his hands out in an attempt to stop them from proceeding. 

However, the agent was knocked to the ground as the group tried to avoid stepping on him as they made their way towards Brownsville, Texas. 

Several children who were crossing the bridge fell to the ground and were trampled by adults rushing the U.S. border.

The migrants – most of them from Venezuela, El Salvador and Honduras- were able to get to the end of the bridge, where they were met by U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Some of the migrants were allowed to enter the U.S. and processed while others, including Venezuela native Darly Mercado, who was traveling with her family, were forced to return to Mexico. 

‘(The agents) told my husband that if they didn’t have a wife, if they didn’t have children, (they wouldn’t be allowed), but the guards said no and pushed us,’ she told reporters.

In a statement provided to DailyMail.com, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the Office of Field Operations temporarily stopped operations on the bridge at 4:15 pm.

‘We made this decision informed by operational considerations, including information regarding groups congregating in the immediate vicinity of the bridge,’ CBP said.

The agency didn’t say how many migrants were processed and permitted to stay in the U.S. 

The massive border crossing attempt is said to be the first since the administration of President Joe Biden lifted Title 42 on May 11.

Hundreds of migrants were able to get past the Gateway International Bridge’s gates on the Mexico side of the crossing in the border town of Matamoros on Monday before they made their way to the opposite end in Brownsville, Texas, where they were met by U.S. Border Patrol agents who accepted some to cross over to the United States while forcing the rest to return to Mexico

Under Title 42, migrants were sent back across the border to Mexico and were denied the opportunity to request asylum. 

Since the removal of the controversial policy, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has registered a 50 percent decrease in encounters with undocumented migrants crossing the United States-Mexico border.

The rule change brings back into effect a previous policy known as Title 8, which allows migrants who cross the border to seek asylum, but also prescribes strict penalties for those crossing who do not qualify, including five-year bans on US entry and possible criminal charges. 

The Biden administration has been trying to control the flow of migrants to the southern United States border, where thousands of people have tried to enter the country every month in the past year.
