Prince William says he took a morning run through Central Park in New York – and no one noticed him.

On Tuesday the royal appeared onstage at the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit in conversation with previous prize winner Vaitea Cowan, who asked: “Did you go running in Central Park this morning?”

The heir apparent to the throne of the UK explained he had “decided to join the hordes of New Yorkers doing their morning routine.”

He added: “It was wonderful waking up in New York on a sunny morning, rather than the rain we had yesterday. It was beautiful getting some fresh air this morning. But it’s been wonderful to be back, 2014 was the last time I was here in New York. I’ve been trying to come back for a couple of years, but with Covid and my grandmother passing last year, it hasn’t been easy.”

William founded the Earthshot Prize in 2020 to award companies and projects that focus on climate solutions.

Meeting fans around the World Trade Centre site, he even told a group that he’d “love to” come back with his family.

The 41-year-old Prince joked to a tourist from Brazil that they had brought the “Brazilian weather with them” and told a British woman he’d “love to come back with his family.” William even joked around with a group of 60-year-old women on a celebratory joint birthday trip, telling them they were a “rowdy” bunch.

One of the members of that group, was Barb Patterson, 60. She was visiting New York from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She said: “He said I won’t ask how old you are. I said ‘I’m 60.’ He said ‘let’s say 50.'” Rebecca MacEachern, 60, another member of the group, said that William joked: “Isn’t 60 the rowdy age?” She added that the Prince of Wales was a “lovely man” and it was a “thrill” to meet him.

The prince was visiting with people near the FDNY Ten House, a fire station opposite the World Trade Centre. William spent 30 minutes being shown around by Laura Kavanagh, including a memorial to the six firefighters from the station who died on 9/11. He even remained unbothered as a trademark rat ran past him through the fire station.

Earlier that day, William attended the Earthshot Summit with other high-profile men like Prince Albert of Monaco and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. The purpose of this trip to New York was Tuesday’s Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit, where this year’s finalists will be revealed before winners are announced during the 2023 Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, which will take place in Singapore.
