BRITNEY Spears’ ex-boyfriend Adnan Ghalib has opened up about fears that she would die from a prescription pill overdose when they dated.

Gimme More star Britney, 41, admits in her new memoir The Woman in Me that her “drug of choice” is the legal amphetamine Adderall.

In the autobiography, she writes that she never had any interest in hard drugs or a drinking problem.

She also says that she hates weed and that even a contact high from being around it makes her feel “slow and dumb.”

But she claims she used Adderall – which is usually prescribed to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) – because it was the only substance which helped her combat depression.

Britney writes: “Adderall made me high, yes, but what I found more appealing was that it gave me a few hours of feeling less depressed.”

Security consultant Adnan, 50, dated Britney in the months leading up to her being placed in a mental health conservatorship under her father Jamie in 2008.

Speaking exclusively to The U.S. Sun, he backed up her claims regarding drugs in the new book.

But he also revealed there were concerns that her Adderall use could have been fatal.

The Brit, who is originally from Birmingham, England, but currently lives in California, said: “Truthfully, I never saw Britney use hard drugs or take narcotics.

“She took drugs that were prescribed by doctors, which were mainly Adderall – which is like legal speed in my mind.

“I saw staff handing her tablets and calling them vitamins.

“She took them and, sometimes within a few minutes, her pupils would be bulging and she would be wound up and frantic.

“I have no idea who was writing these prescriptions.

“When she took them, she was up for days at a time and I felt like I had to stay up with her.

“It was like she was drinking Red Bull, cleaning the house, and it was seven to nine days where we wouldn’t sleep properly.

“I am no medical expert and I don’t use Adderall, so I cannot know if she was abusing it.”

‘IT COULD BE LETHAL’

Adnan said that although her Adderall use was legal and prescribed by doctors, people around her were seriously worried about it.

He explained: “I drove Britney to pick up her prescriptions at Rite Aid, and her manager at the time, Sam Lutfi, called and said: ‘If the prescriptions are for Adderall, you have to confiscate them.

“‘You have to get rid of it. I know it’s prescribed, but at the same time, if she takes more than her prescribed dose it could be lethal.

“‘I know she’s prescribed it, but she’s not limiting what she’s taking. You need to get rid of it.’

“I didn’t want her to die, so I knew I had to act.”

Adnan explained that he decided to pour the pills into a paper bag and put the empty bottle back in Britney’s purse.

He said: “When she looked, she said: ‘There’s no medicine in here.’

“I acted like I knew nothing but then worried it’d blow back on me for denying her medication.

“She insisted we go back, within the same hour, and had a fit at the pharmacists, shouting at them, saying ‘There’s no medication in there.’

“They told her they couldn’t give her more medication.

“She was yelling, ‘You’re not refilling it, you didn’t fill it in the first place.’

“It turned into a whole thing, the stand-off lasted for 10 minutes.

“Britney’s face was getting redder by the moment, as she became frustrated and in deep despair.

“She stormed out and cursed in a British accent at the photographers outside.”

‘WOUND UP AND FRANTIC’

Britney discusses her relationship with Adnan in her new memoir, although she never mentions him by name.

She tells how he had previously worked as a paparazzi photographer but she liked him because he was “chivalrous and helped me out when the others got too aggressive.”

The book reveals how their relationship was brought to an abrupt end when the conservatorship began.

Adnan explained that the day he got rid of Britney’s Adderall pills led to their first real fight.

He said: “In the driveway, Britney just broke down sobbing uncontrollably and then didn’t stop until she fell asleep in her library 30 minutes later.

“That day was the first time where she was volatile towards me.

“She was verbally abusive because she didn’t know what to do.

“I didn’t want to see her that hurt and broken but I just had to suck it up.

“My choice was the right one, because I didn’t want her to die.”

Adnan claimed that Britney’s manager later looked into where she was getting the Adderall.

“Sam said: ‘No doctor is supposed to be prescribing her Adderall.’

“He made me take a picture because he wanted to know the doctor.

“I think the doctor later got in trouble from prescribing it.”
