Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) argued with far-left blogger Aaron Maté of The Grayzone, an online outlet sympathetic to the Russian, Chinese, and Syrian governments on Monday, eventually warning Maté that he would have him “thrown off this train.”

The exchange began when Maté began recording Coons and professed to be “sorry” to put him on the spot, prompting Coons to ask him who he was. Maté identified himself and then proceeded to ask him about the United States’ support for Israel, repeatedly stating that “children are dying” after Coons reminded him that they were in the quiet car and informed him that he would not participate in the conversation.

“U.S. weapons are killing kids in Gaza,” insisted Maté.

“Who are you?” inquired Coons again.

“My name is Aaron Maté, I’m a journalist,” replied his interlocutor.

“Nice to meet you, Aaron. Please stop talking to me,” shot back Coons.

The conversation proceeded apace with Coons repeatedly asking Maté to stop and the latter continuing to harangue him, even after Coons reported him to an Amtrak worker.

“This is not an appropriate place for you to interview me,” argued Coons before quickly summarizing his position on the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

“I’m not gonna call for a ceasefire. I strongly support humanitarian pauses. I’ve urged the Israeli government to target their campaign against Hamas. But you need to stop,” said the senator.

“Please stop, or I’m gonna have you thrown off this train,” added Coons. “This is not professional journalism, please get up and leave now.”

Maté went on to object to Coons’s condemnation of Hamas’ attack before Coons left his seat.

The Grayzone has denied that Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons during the Syrian Civil War, understated the details of China’s persecution of its Uyghur Muslim minority, and published Russian propaganda throughout the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war.
