A surfer in Hawaii was killed after an encounter with a shark on Saturday, the County of Maui has announced. 

Maui police responded to a call at a beach in Paia on the island’s northern shore on Saturday morning. Upon arrival, they transported the victim, later identified as Ha’iku resident Jason Carter, to shore by jet ski. 

Carter, 39, was then taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries.
