Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), and his fellow hardliners, tore into Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Friday after Johnson scored a win against hardliner Republicans while reauthorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, FISA.

The FISA reauthorization passed the House with bipartisan support, 273-147, but became more contested as an amendment proposed by Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) lost by a one-vote margin, with Johnson casting the final vote. According to House rules, a tie vote on an amendment results in it failing.

Massie shredded Johnson online for his vote, writing, “This is how the Constitution dies. By a tie vote, the amendment to require a warrant to spy on Americans goes down in flames. This is a sad day for America.”

“The Speaker doesn’t always vote in the House, but he was the tie breaker today. He voted against warrants,” Massie added.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) vowed political retaliation against the 86 Republicans who voted to kill the amendment, including much of the GOP House leadership.

“Every one of these members who voted against a warrant requirement, they are the deciding vote. They own it and some of them may see me showing up in their districts very soon to campaign against them and to stand for the Constitution,” Gaetz said.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has already filed a motion to vacate the speakership and accused Johnson of being no different than former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Johnson is set to meet with former President Donald Trump on Friday night, who despite wanting FISA to be “killed” is reportedly vehemently against removing him from his post and plunging the House into further chaos.
