Former President Donald Trump appeared to suggest that immigrants will try to kill and perhaps eat him in the coming weeks. His remarks come after two would-be American-born assassins were prevented from doing him grave harm.

On Sunday, a man was arrested in Florida after being spotted with a rifle near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course. The Secret Service said the man did not have a line of sight on the former president and did not fire his weapon. In July, Trump was shot in the ear while at a rally in Pennsylvania. The gunman killed one rally attendee and wounded two others before being shot to death by the Secret Service.

Speaking at a rally in Uniondale, New York on Wednesday night, Trump reiterated his attacks on Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio. During last week’s presidential debate, he repeated the false claim that migrants in the city are stealing and eating people’s pets. The lie has been repeated by his running mate JD Vance, who represents the city in the U.S. Senate. Trump also alluded to reports of Venezuelan migrants in Colorado, who were falsely reported to have “taken over” an apartment building in Aurora.

“How about in Springfield, Ohio?” the ex-president told the crowd in New York. “They had 32,000 [people]. This is a little beautiful town. No crime. No problem. Thirty-two thousand illegal immigrants come into the town.”

It’s worth noting that the Haitian migrants are in Ohio legally after being granted Temporary Protected Status.

“So, they almost doubled their population in a period of a few weeks,” he continued. “Can you believe it? And you know what? They’ve got to get much tougher. I’m gonna go there in the next two weeks. I’m going to Springfield and I’m going to Aurora. You may never see me again! But that’s ok. Gotta do what I got to do. Whatever happened to Trump? Well, he never got out of Springfield.”

If Trump was making a cannibalism crack, it would be in line with his ongoing references to “the late, great Hannibal Lecter.”
