The View’s Whoopi Goldberg claimed on Tuesday that Hollywood is a “very right-leaning town” after actor Zachary Levi told a crowd his coming out in support of former President Donald Trump might be “career suicide.”

At a Michigan rally, Levi endorsed Trump before introducing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard to the stage. While speaking with Gabbard, he called Hollywood “very liberal” and said he could face potential backlash for coming out as MAGA. Levi is best known for the TV series Chuck and his role in the Shazam films.

“Within my industry, as you can probably imagine, Hollywood is a very town and this very well could constitute career suicide,” the actor said.

Goldberg played the clip on Tuesday’s The View and shook her head in reaction.

“That’s not necessarily true. From the beginning of Hollywood, there have been — it’s always been a very right-leaning town, but I know you don’t know much about the Hollywood history, so let me school you,” Goldberg said.

She argued Levi’s point is “BS” because actors like Jon Voight and Dennis Quaid are working today.

“We are, like America is, we’re mixed. We’re a mixed bunch and sometimes it may seem like there’s more Democrats and sometimes it seems like there’s more Republicans, but the truth of the matter is very few people seem to bite it because they’re Republican. Jon Voight, who is working. Dennis Quaid, who is working. People are working. Stop that! It’s more BS and it’s unnecessary,” Goldberg said.

Voight is currently starring in Francis Ford Coppola’s independently-produced Megalopolis. He also has a supporting role in Reagan, which stars Quaid as late President Ronald Reagan. He came out in support of Trump while promoting the film, which was also not funded through any major studio and features other outspoken conservatives like Kevin Sorbo.

Though Hollywood was once an industry rocked by an actual blacklist as Joseph McCarthy would accuse various artists of being communists, a number of conservatives and right-leaning artists have pointed to a major turn in the industry in more recent years. Conservatives in the industry created their own networking group Friends of Abe in 2004.

Goldberg named two actors who are working, but numerous conservatives have said their politics have negatively impacted their career. James Woods was dropped by his agent in 2018 over his pro-Trump statements on social media, and the actor has now turned to producing and music to maintain a career. He executive produced Oppenheimer after buying the rights to the original book and pitching it to director Christopher Nolan. He also claimed he was told at the time to keep his involvement quiet for fear members of the industry would refuse to support the film during awards season. Actor Robert Davi claimed in 2017 he lost a part due to his Trump support as well, and other conservative artists have cited similar struggles.

Vaccine mandates during the pandemic in Hollywood also led to a number of right-leaning artists losing gigs, including Matthew Marsden and Drea de Matteo, the latter of whom turned to OnlyFans and a clothing brand to make a living when acting work dried up. She has also said there are plenty of Trump supporters in Hollywood who choose to keep quiet out of fear of backlash.
